Protein Powder Guide

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Cutting out dairy in the new year? Going vegan? Trying a paleo diet? Looking to add collagen into your routine? I have a protein powder recommendation for all of the above! All of these protein powders are free of dairy and gluten. I have included a vegan friendly plant based option, an egg white vegetarian option, and a collagen based ketogenic/paleo option.

Protein powders are a great way to thicken and add flavor in smoothies, coffee, oatmeal or baked goods, or just enjoyed in a shaker bottle on the go! The options are endless once you find the supplement perfect for you and your lifestyle. It is important to remember that every body's protein intake is different depending upon gender, height, weight, and activity level, so be sure to consult with a professional before making any significant changes. Supplementing with a protein powder is ideal for both males and females looking to increase lean muscle mass. This means something different to everyone - women looking to "tone up" need protein to tighten those muscles, men looking to "bulk up" need extra protein to build, and anyone looking to lose fat and decrease BMI would need to substitute high quality protein for other sugary or processed foods.

Plant Based

Sunwarrior Warrior Blend - I love Sunwarrior Vegan Protein, and the Warrior Blend is my favorite. This blend is formulated without rice and is a lot smoother and less grainy than other vegan proteins. It is made up of hemp seeds, yellow peas, goji berries, and coconut. These ingredients offer a plant based complete amino acid profile, ideal for vegan diets. In addition to Arginine, Lysine, Leucine, and branched chain amino acids, this blend also supplies the body with fiber and MCT's (medium chain triglycerides). MCTs are great for reducing cholesterol, blood pressure, and inflammation while promoting fat loss and maintaining a healthy metabolism. Flavors include vanilla, chocolate, berry, mocha and natural.

Egg White

Julian Bakery Egg White Protein - This egg white protein is a great option for a paleo or ketogenic diet, and it is also suitable for a vegetarian diet. The formula has added probiotics for easier digestion and is free of soy, gluten, dairy and GMO's. It is sweetened with Monk Fruit and only has 2 grams of carbohydrates, perfect for anyone limiting sugar or carbs. Comes in chocolate, vanilla, coconut cream, cinnamon roll, espresso, and unflavored.

Collagen

Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel - The perfect primal, paleo and keto collagen powder, free of sugar, dairy, gluten and soy. This formula made with grass-fed collagen peptides includes coconut for healthy fats and a more satiating combination. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle and carrying out basic functions throughout the body, but collagen especially is great for joints, hair, skin and nails. (You can read more about collagen in my previous post.)
